Default What is an odt file?

Someone sent me a file (it's an article) in odt format. Anyone know what it takes to open this? It just looks like gibberish in notepad.

Looks like I answered my own question - It's an open office file. For us windows / Microsoft Office types to open it, you'll need the OpenXML/ODF Translator Add-in for Office that available here:

Terry, just for future reference: you can also ask them to save it in Word format before sending it to you. I use Open Office and it's possible to do that.

I also just saw another program you can use.

Textmaker Viewer is a lightweight, fast, document viewer. It contains no editing functionality, but does allow you to open, search, and copy text from a variety of common document formats, including .doc, .docx (Office 2007), .rtf, and .odt (Open Document format, used by OpenOffice.org.)

OpenDocument text files can be opened and edited with any program that supports OpenOffice, NeoOffice, including Mac, AbiWord Mac and Windows, and KWord Unix. It also can be imported into Google Docs, Google word processor and Web-based spreadsheet application.

Hi,
An ODT file is an XML (eXtensible hypertext Markup Language) founded open source benchmark for text documents, conceived particularly for the OpenOffice register of tools. It is part of the OpenDocument 1.0 specification conceived by OASIS for OpenOffice Writer and StarOffice phrase processor with the aim of producing it the commerce benchmark expressly in mind. It has been taken up as a godsend by numerous open source supporters who deny to take up the most well liked proprietary XML-based text format – one utilised by Microsoft’s Word – the .doc file.

Thanks,
James
